Celebrating 47 Years of Connection: Airpower and Agriculture in Southwest Oklahoma

Last Updated 2/6/2025Posted in MAC

On January 15, 2025, the longstanding partnership between Altus Air Force Base and the local community took center stage during the annual Air Power and Agriculture Tour in Altus, Oklahoma. This unique event highlighted the vital relationship between two key contributors to the region’s identity: the Air Force and agriculture.

The day began with a scenic trip to Lake Altus-Lugert. Attendees, including Airmen from the 97th Air Mobility Wing and community members, toured the dam under the guidance of Tom Buchanan, manager of the Lugert-Altus Irrigation District. Buchanan shared insights into the dam’s history and its essential role in supporting local farmers by providing critical irrigation. Constructed in the 1940s, the dam has been pivotal for agricultural success in the area. Buchanan also discussed ongoing improvements to the dam’s efficiency, aimed at minimizing water loss and ensuring effective delivery to farms.

Reflecting on the experience, Ben Mantonya, a non-commissioned officer from the 97th Logistics Readiness Squadron, expressed his admiration. “Learning about the history and importance of the dam was incredible. It gave me a newfound appreciation for the work that’s gone into sustaining this resource,” he shared.

After the dam tour, participants enjoyed a lunch provided by the Military Affairs Committee. During the meal, Charlcey Plummer, a local cotton producer, delivered an engaging presentation on cotton farming and its economic significance in the region. Plummer highlighted the deep connections between the farming community and the Air Force, emphasizing how both sectors contribute to the prosperity of Southwest Oklahoma.

“The Air Power and Agriculture Tour is a beautiful way to unite two pillars of our community,” Plummer noted. “I loved sharing the story of our work in cotton farming and learning more about the Airmen and their role at Altus Air Force Base.”

The tour served as a reminder of the economic and cultural significance of agriculture in the area. Mantonya, reflecting on the day’s activities, added, “Seeing how deeply farming is interwoven with this community’s identity was eye-opening. It’s incredible to learn how agriculture impacts the local economy.”

Later this year, the partnership will continue to grow as members of the agricultural community are invited to tour Altus Air Force Base. This reciprocal visit aims to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the bonds between the Airmen of the 97th AMW and the region’s farming community.

The Air Power and Agriculture Tour stands as a testament to the enduring relationship between these two vital sectors, showcasing how collaboration and shared appreciation can sustain a thriving community.
